Kalgoorlie: History, Adventures and Amazing Attractions
Decision to Move to Kalgoorlie
Deciding to live in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, was a quick and surprising decision. I had never heard of this city until, while looking for a job in the hospitality sector to complete some units of my Hospitality Management diploma, I came across it by chance.
I was looking for a place where I could complete the tests needed for school: bartending, making cocktails and coffees. My mission was clear: find a place where I could learn and apply these skills.
At the time, I was an international student in Perth, amid the uncertainty of COVID-19. I created an ad on Facebook to find a job that would allow me to complete my logbook, and I also wanted to get away from the city.
That's how a job offer came from Kalgoorlie.
First Steps in Kalgoorlie
First, I researched the place. Despite receiving less than encouraging references from the people I spoke to, I met with the owner of two motels to see what they had to offer.
The offer was good and my adventurous spirit told me, why not? What's the worst that can happen? That's how I came to this charming city.
How to Get to Kalgoorlie?
Kalgoorlie is located almost 600 km inland from Perth. You can get there by car, plane, train or bus from Perth. In my case, sometimes I drove and other times I took the train. I feel like since I arrived in Australia, the best way to see the country has been by driving, so it's a personal preference.
However, if you want to get there quickly, the plane will be your best alternative.
What to Visit in Kalgoorlie?
This mining town is full of history. Whether you visit for vacation, work or if you are doing a road trip to Perth or Esperance, it is an excellent alternative to spend a few days. It all depends on your interests and your time.
My Favorite Places
Museum Of The Goldfields
This museum shows the history of gold in the area and how the first settlers came to the area. It has a number of ancient artifacts and gold samples. Something that I remember very well is an article that showed how the indigenous people of the area found water through frogs in addition to being able to see the entire city from the roof.
heartwalk
If you are a lover of murals, you will love this walk. The city has a number of murals created by local artists. You can spend the morning walking and taking photos. I recommend finding the map at the Kalgoorlie Boulder Visitor Center so you can enjoy these works of art.
Walk through Kalgoorlie Center and Boulder
The center of these two places is full of historic houses. If you are an architecture lover, you will like these streets. You will find buildings from the late 1800s.
Have a coffee watching The Super Pit
It is one of the largest gold mines in Australia. In Kalgoorlie you can visit the mine viewpoint, where you can see part of the operations, such as the large trucks and the explosions. I recommend buying a coffee in the city and some snacks to visit this viewpoint.
Questa House
Questa Casa is a brothel, yes, as you read it. It has been open for more than 120 years and offers tours for those who want to visit it. You see, Kalgoorlie is full of surprises, which explains why it has a controversial reputation. I was only able to take the photo at the entrance since it was closed that day.
Have a Beer at Exchange Hotel Kalgoorlie
In Kalgoorlie I learned about a profession called skimpy. You might wonder what that is? They are bartenders who serve in their underwear. The first time I saw them it was shocking, because I was not used to it. One night we went out to party with my coworkers. They showed me different places and we arrived at the hotel. For them it was normal, for me it was shocking, but after a few beers and talking with the locals, everything seems normal. It is an unusual experience and part of the trip.
Karlkurla Bushland park
It is a beautiful natural park ideal for lovers of nature and bird watching. With perfect walking trails, it offers a peaceful experience amidst the native vegetation. The best time to visit is early in the morning or at dusk, when temperatures are cooler. Don't miss the charming viewpoint, from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings.
