Discovering Cusco: An Unforgettable Tour through the Sacred Valley

observing the sacred valley

Cusco, the jewel of Peru and former capital of the Inca Empire, is not only a destination steeped in history, but also a place where culture and gastronomy intertwine in fascinating ways. On my recent trip to Peru, I had the opportunity to spend a week in this beautiful country, and one of the highlights was a day tour of the Sacred Valley that really blew me away.

A Day Full of Adventure

The day started early, as is usual for those who want to make the most of their time in Cusco. By 5:30 am, we were ready and excited for the day ahead. I had a quick breakfast at a local cafe, enjoying a delicious lomo saltado empanada and muna tea, something I highly recommend. There is nothing worse than starting an adventure on an empty stomach! If you can't eat breakfast, or if you prepare some snacks the day before.

The tour in Cusco cost us 150 soles each, included a visit to several iconic places, such as Pisaq , Ollantaytambo , and Chinchero , as well as a textile factory in Chinchero. We had a tour guide who spoke English and Spanish, which made the experience even more enriching.

Pisac: History and Tradition

The first stop was Pisaq , where the impressive Inca terraces unfold before your eyes. The view from the top is spectacular, and our guide shared fascinating stories about life in Inca times. The terraces, used for agriculture, are a testimony to the ingenuity of the ancient Peruvians. We walked through the ruins, admiring the architecture and enjoying the tranquility of the place.

At the Pisac market, I also had the opportunity to interact with local artisans selling their products. It is an ideal place to buy souvenirs and experience the living culture of Cusco . Remember to bring cash to enjoy a local snack such as corn with butter or buy some crafts.

Lunch: Trying Local Delicacies

After visiting Pisaq we headed to the restaurant where we would have our buffet lunch that was included in the tour. It was delicious and an excellent way to try typical dishes from the region. Among the flavors I tried, the Ceviche and the lomo saltado were the most outstanding, I was not prepared to try the famous Cuy Chactado, it will be my mission for the next trip. This mix of history and gastronomy makes Cusco an unforgettable tourist destination.

Ollantaytambo: An Archaeological Jewel

Then we headed to Ollantaytambo , another archaeological site that you cannot miss, this one is located in the Heart of the Sacred Valley. This place is known for its huge stones, which are said to have been brought from nearby quarries. The structures here were used for both defense and religious ceremonies.

I recommend staying one night in this town so you can explore it and connect with the inhabitants who keep the traditions of their ancestors alive.

Chinchero: Weaving History

The next stop was Chinchero , known for its rich textile heritage. This place is famous for its colorful weavings and traditional techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation. We visited a textile factory, where we learned about the production process and the ancient techniques used by local artisans. It is an experience that connects you deeply with the local culture and makes you appreciate the art of Peruvian textiles even more.

Textiles are an excellent option to take a piece of Cusco with you. So if you plan to buy something, make sure you have cash on hand.

Practical Tips for the Tour

Here are some practical tips for those who wish to take this tour of the Sacred Valley :

  • Breakfast before you leave : Make sure you have a good breakfast before you start your day. Energy is key to enjoying all activities.

  • Comfortable clothing : Wear clothing that protects you from heat during the day and cold at night. In Cusco, temperatures can vary drastically.

  • Comfortable shoes : Be prepared to walk, as you will explore many sites. A good pair of shoes will make the experience much more pleasant.

  • Altitude : Walk slowly and give your body time to adjust to the altitude. Cusco is located more than 3,400 meters above sea level, and it is important to listen to your body.

  • Hat and sunscreen : The sun can be strong, so take care of your skin. A hat is essential to protect you.

  • Cash : Bring some cash to buy souvenirs at local markets.

Final Thoughts

While this tour gives you a wonderful overview of the Sacred Valley, my recommendation is to spend a day at each place so you can immerse yourself in its history and culture. By doing so, you will have the opportunity to experience the essence of Cusco in a deeper way. Each place has its own magic, and the experience is enriched by being able to explore without rushing.

Remember that this area has two seasons: dry and wet, so plan your visit based on the weather. The best time to visit Cusco and the Sacred Valley is during the dry season, from May to October, when conditions are ideal for exploring.

Cusco is a place that invites you to explore. Every corner has its own story, and every flavor has a story to tell. I can't wait to return and continue discovering more about this magical destination. If you are thinking of traveling to Peru, do not hesitate to include Cusco in your itinerary. Until the next adventure!
